Hurricane Season Household Staffing in Charleston: A Plan for Families

Hurricane season runs through Nov 30. Here is how Charleston families keep nannies and household staff covered, paid, and safe before a storm.

Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, so Charleston families still have weeks of it left. The families who handle a storm best have a written plan for their household staff before one is forecast: who is responsible for what, how everyone will communicate, how pay works if work stops, and who covers childcare if schools close.

If you live in Mount Pleasant, Daniel Island, Kiawah Island, Sullivan’s Island, or James Island, your home and your household team both depend on a plan that is clear well before a storm is forecast. This guide covers the staffing side of that plan. It does not replace official guidance. For forecasts, evacuation zones, and orders, always follow the National Weather Service and your county emergency management office.

1. Decide who does what

When a storm is days away, a household can lose hours to confusion. Assign responsibilities in advance:

  • A nanny is responsible for the children’s care, comfort, and routine, and for knowing where the family’s go-bag and medications are.
  • A housekeeper or house staff may help secure indoor items, stock supplies, and prepare the home for your return.
  • A household manager typically owns the whole plan: calling vendors, confirming shutters, pool, and generator service, coordinating with staff, and keeping you informed.

If no one holds this role today, a storm is a good moment to see why families add a household manager. See our guide on the household manager role.

2. Set up communication that does not depend on one phone

Share a simple contact tree with everyone on your team: primary and backup phone numbers, an out-of-area contact, and a group text. Agree on when you will check in and who makes the call if you leave town. Cell service can be unreliable during and after a storm, so decide in advance what happens if someone cannot reach you.

3. Put your pay policy in writing

This is the question that causes the most stress for your team, and it is easy to settle ahead of time. Decide and write down:

  • Whether staff are paid for scheduled hours if you ask them not to work, or if the home is unsafe
  • Whether you pay for days when staff evacuate, and how long that applies
  • How travel or lodging costs are handled if you ask a nanny to go with the family
  • Whether storm-day work earns extra pay

Your work agreement and your accountant should have the final say on what applies to your situation. A clear policy protects both sides and shows your team that you value them, which also helps with retention. See our guide to nanny holiday pay and time off for how families handle similar questions.

4. Line up backup childcare

If schools close or your nanny cannot reach your home, you need a backup. Ask your nanny whether they have family or storm plans of their own that affect availability, and agree on how much notice you each need. Some families keep a second vetted caregiver on file for exactly these weeks. If you do not have one, we can help you find a reliable backup. See our guide on hiring a career nanny in Charleston.

5. Plan the home and the return

Ask whoever manages your home to confirm the basics now: shutters and windows, outdoor furniture, the generator, supplies, and a plan for who checks the property afterward. Decide who is allowed to re-enter and when. Keep important documents and a list of your vendors and insurance contacts in one place your manager and you can both reach.

A quick checklist to share with your team

  • Written storm plan with roles for each person
  • Contact tree with backup numbers and an out-of-area contact
  • Pay policy for storm days, in writing
  • Backup childcare plan
  • Home preparation list and vendor contacts
  • A date to review the plan each year before June

Frequently asked questions

When does hurricane season end in Charleston?

The Atlantic hurricane season officially ends November 30, although storms can still form outside those dates.

Do I have to pay my nanny if there is a storm?

That depends on your work agreement and your situation, so ask your accountant or an employment professional. The most useful step is to decide your policy in writing before a storm is forecast.

Should a nanny evacuate with the family?

Some families ask their nanny to travel with them, and some do not. If you do, agree on pay, lodging, and travel costs ahead of time.

Who should coordinate my household during a storm?

Ideally one person owns the plan. For many families that is a household manager, who can handle vendors, staff, and communication so you can focus on your family.

Can Dream Nannies help me find a backup nanny?

Yes. Tell us about your family and schedule, and we will recruit, screen, and interview so you meet only strong matches.
