Fall Activities for Kids in Austin (2026)

Sweet Eats, Texas Pumpkin Fest, Fortlandia and the free Round Rock and Georgetown events — 2026 dates and prices read off official pages, stale ones flagged.

Austin gets a real fall, or something close enough to it. By the second week of October the evenings are genuinely pleasant, which is why so much of what the city puts on for children happens after four in the afternoon. It is also a market where the good stuff books out: Austin families are organized, the events are smaller than Houston’s or Dallas’s, and “we’ll decide Saturday morning’ often means not going.

Below is what is actually running in fall 2026, with every date, price and hour taken from the venue’s or city’s own page. Austin has an unusual number of stale event pages still sitting online from last year — the Austin Zoo’s is the worst offender — so where a 2026 figure has not been published, this guide says so rather than repeating a 2025 number that will be wrong at the gate.

Farms and festivals

Sweet Eats Adventure Farm — Georgetown

The biggest fall farm in the Austin orbit, and the one with the longest hours — open until 9pm Sunday through Thursday in October and 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays, which means an after-dinner visit is genuinely on the table.

  • Kids do: pick-your-own pumpkins, slides, mazes, farm attractions
  • Ages: 3–12
  • Cost: Sweet Eats has not posted a 2026 general admission price. What is published: the pumpkin-patch-only entry is free Monday through Friday and $5 online Saturday and Sunday, and pick-your-own pumpkins are $0.85 per pound. The farm is cashless — bring a card.
  • Dates and hours: Sept 19 through Nov 8. October hours are Sun–Thu 9am–9pm and Fri–Sat 9am–10pm, with Oct 31 closing early at 6pm.

Nanny tip: the patch-only ticket is the under-appreciated option. Free on a weekday, no admission to the attractions, and a three-year-old who wants to carry a pumpkin around a field is entirely satisfied by it. One caution: Sweet Eats’ site refers in places to “Friday October 31st” — Oct 31, 2026 is a Saturday, so that line is left over from a previous year.

Texas Pumpkin Fest — Leander

Flat $15, free for children in diapers, free parking, and an eleven-hour day. For straightforward value with young children this is the best of the Austin-area paid festivals.

  • Kids do: pumpkin patch, rides, games, activities
  • Ages: 2–10
  • Cost: $15; free for children in diapers; parking free
  • Dates and hours: weekends from Oct 10 through Nov 1, plus Monday Oct 12 and Friday Oct 30. 10am–9pm.

Nanny tip: the Columbus Day Monday, Oct 12, is the quiet one. Same $15, a fraction of the Saturday crowd.

Driftwood Fall Festival — Vista Brewing

Thirty minutes southwest, on the Vista Brewing grounds, and cheap midweek: $8 Wednesday and Thursday, $15 Friday through Sunday, free for 3 and under, free parking.

Nanny tip: go on a Wednesday or Thursday. It is $8 instead of $15, and a late morning puts you on the lawn before the afternoon crowd builds.

Pumpkin Nights — Pioneer Farms

A walk-through of lit pumpkin installations at Pioneer Farms, running Sept 17 through Oct 31. Free for 3 and under. The details that trip families up:

  • Closed nights: Pumpkin Nights is dark on Oct 5 and 6 (and was closed Sept 21–23 and Sept 28–29). It is not open every night of the season.
  • Hours: from Oct 2 through 31, 6:00–9:00pm on weekdays and 6:00–9:30pm on weekends. You book a timed slot and are expected to arrive inside it.
  • Tickets: sold online and in advance only — there is no gate sale, and the price rises as nights sell out. Many nights do sell out.
  • Parking: $10 per car, cash or card. The farm warns the parking line can run up to 30 minutes on busy evenings, so build in a buffer. The lot closes at 9:30pm on weekdays and 10:00pm on weekends.

Nanny tip: book the earliest slot of the evening. With a 6pm entry you are through the installation before a young child is past bedtime, and you miss the worst of the parking queue on the way in.

Pumpkin Nights describes itself as skipping the scares, and the main walk-through is indeed gentle. But a haunted house is bundled into the VIP ticket. If you are buying for young children, buy the standard ticket, not the VIP one.

Boo at the Zoo — Austin Zoo

Eight dates: October 2, 3, 9, 10, 16, 17, 23 and 24, 2026 — the four Friday-Saturday pairs. The zoo has not published a 2026 price or an evening schedule. The $24 ticket and the 5:45–9:00pm window that still circulate online come from the zoo’s 2025 event page, which is stale; do not plan around them. Check the 2026 listing before you go.

Free Austin-area events

Round Rock Fall Fun Festival

Our pick for the youngest children anywhere in this guide. Wednesday Oct 28, 2026, 9 to 11:30am, free, and the city describes it explicitly as an event for toddlers and preschoolers — no older-sibling chaos, no evening crowd, done before lunch.

UMLAUF StrawFest

Sunday Oct 25, 2026, 11am to 4pm, entirely free with free parking, on the sculpture garden grounds just south of downtown. The best free central option of the season, and five hours long enough that you can arrive whenever naps allow.

Georgetown Trick or Treat Trail

Thursday Oct 29, 2026, 5 to 7pm, free. The costume contest runs in brackets with published times: ages 0–3 at 5:30, 4–6 at 6:00, and 7–10 at 6:30. If your child is entering, work backwards from their slot rather than turning up at five and waiting.

Lakeway Witches Ride

Saturday Oct 17, 2026, 5:30 to 9pm, free. Several hundred costumed cyclists through Lakeway — a spectating event rather than a participating one for small children, and a very good one. Pick a spot on the route early.

Viva La Vida Fest — Mexic-Arte Museum

Saturday Oct 24, 2026, free, with the grand procession at noon. The oldest and largest Día de los Muertos celebration in Austin. The procession itself is the part young children remember; the museum programming suits eight and up.

Paid, and worth knowing the details

Fortlandia — Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center

Oct 2, 2026 through Jan 31, 2027 — a four-month run of architect-built play forts in the gardens, included with ordinary admission, free for 2 and under. The Center encourages pre-purchasing admission, which is worth doing on an October weekend.

Nanny tip: this is the one on the list with no deadline pressure. If October fills up, Fortlandia is still there in December with nobody in it.

Kalahari Spooktacular — Round Rock

Saturday Oct 24, 2026, 5 to 9pm. Parking is $30 for non-guests and Kalahari has not posted a per-person price, so check that before you plan around it.

Hamilton Pool Preserve

Beautiful, and the most logistics of anything here. Reservations are required every day, the vehicle reservation is $12 online, and the $8 adult entry is cash only at the gate. Children’s pricing and swimming availability change with water conditions, so check both before you book the slot.

Round Rock Hometown Halloween

Friday Oct 30, 2026, 3 to 7pm. Round Rock has not posted a cost or an activity list for 2026 yet — the date and window are confirmed, nothing else is.

Free, any day, no planning

  • Austin Nature & Science Center, Zilker — free, open Monday through Saturday 9am to 5pm and Sunday noon to 5pm. There is a Science Storytime for under-4s on Monday Oct 12, 2026 at 9:30am, which is about as gentle an outing as exists.
  • Mayfield Park, Tarrytown — free, open 5am to 10pm, and there are peacocks, which no four-year-old has ever been unimpressed by. No pets allowed, so leave the dog.

One closure to plan around: the Zilker Botanical Garden is closed Oct 1 through 16, 2026. If it was on your list for the first half of the month, move it to the second.

Fall at home, for the days it does not happen

  • Leaf-and-tape suncatchers. Cedar elm, Spanish oak and sycamore all press well, and Austin has all three. Press between two strips of clear packing tape, trim to shape, stick on a window.
  • Pumpkin seed mosaics. Rinse, dry overnight on a towel, then glue onto cardstock. A drop of food coloring in a sandwich bag dyes a batch in under a minute.
  • Papel picado. Folded tissue paper and safety scissors, cut and unfolded. If you went to Viva La Vida, this is the natural follow-on, and a six-year-old can manage it alone.
  • Bake something slow. Pumpkin bread with a four-year-old stirring fills an afternoon and ends in dinner.

Austin fall activities: common questions

The Round Rock Fall Fun Festival on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, from 9 to 11:30am. It is free and the city describes it specifically as an event for toddlers and preschoolers. For a central option, UMLAUF StrawFest on Sunday, October 25, 11am to 4pm, is free with free parking.

The Austin Zoo has not published a 2026 price or evening hours. The confirmed 2026 dates are October 2, 3, 9, 10, 16, 17, 23 and 24. The $24 ticket and 5:45 to 9:00pm window still circulating online come from the zoo’s 2025 event page and should not be relied on.

Sweet Eats has not posted a 2026 general admission price. What it does publish: pumpkin-patch-only entry is free Monday through Friday and $5 online on Saturday and Sunday, and pick-your-own pumpkins are $0.85 per pound. The farm is cashless. It runs September 19 through November 8, with October hours of 9am to 9pm Sunday through Thursday and 9am to 10pm Friday and Saturday.

Pumpkin Nights at Pioneer Farms sells online only, with no gate sale, and prices rise as nights sell out; it is also closed on October 5 and 6. Hamilton Pool Preserve requires a reservation every day, with a $12 vehicle reservation online and $8 adult entry in cash at the gate. The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center encourages pre-purchasing admission for Fortlandia weekends.

Yes. The Round Rock Fall Fun Festival, the Georgetown Trick or Treat Trail, UMLAUF StrawFest and Texas Pumpkin Fest in Leander are all built for young children. Pumpkin Nights at Pioneer Farms describes itself as skipping the scares, but a haunted house is bundled into its VIP ticket, so buy the standard ticket for little ones.

The Zilker Botanical Garden is closed from October 1 through 16, 2026. Mayfield Park nearby is open 5am to 10pm and free, but does not allow pets. The Austin Nature and Science Center in Zilker is open and free, Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm and Sunday noon to 5pm.
